About Us

Sonya has been doing hair for nearly 39 years. She began her career because as a child she had problems with her own hair coming out every year, so she wanted to learn how to fix the problems. Therefore, she enrolled in beauty school in 1982 while still a student in high school. It took Sonya two years to complete the course. She would go to school for a half day and then to beauty school for the rest of the day. She completed beauty school in 1984. The first person she worked for was Ms. Leora Franklin at the Glamourama on Glass St. She worked there for 2 ½ years. Her aunt, Bessie Lou Hill, had the Beauty Break Salon which her husband had built for her back in 1946. At the time, she would not allow Sonya to work there until she had some experience under her belt. After the 2 ½ years with Ms. Franklin, her aunt Bessie Lou came and asked her to take over Beauty Break because they wanted to keep the salon in the family. Beauty Break is still in existence to this day and relocated to their current location at 1716 N. Forest Lane in 2007. 

Sonya stated that one of the most challenging things of owning your own shop is the overhead. The mortgage, utilities, equipment and taxes is a continuous load to bear as a business owner. Also, the ability to deal with personalities and different types of hair can and at times be a challenge.
